The project will start with the modest PhoneSat 1.0 which will be powered by a Google Nexus One and will “stay alive for a short period of time and beam pictures of space back to ground control.” The Nexus One satellite will also be monitoring its own health and will beam down information to NASA scientists, advising them of any effects space may have on the device.

The follow-up to this will be PhoneSat 2.0 which will use a Google Nexus S:

“A Nexus S will serve as its core, with other upgrades including a two-way S-band radio (allowing engineers to control the satellite from Earth), solar panels to enable longer flights, and a GPS transponder. Building on PhoneSat’s foundation will permit mission designers to more affordably launch satellites for a variety of purposes, according to NASA. Examples include testing new technologies / components for space flight and conducting inexpensive observations of Earth.”

What’s even more amazing is that the PhoneSat project will only cost them $3,500 per satellite. NASA is hoping that their new approach at satellite construction will allow them to release new technology for less and at a  faster rate, allowing them to remain the leading space agency.

Singapore’s SingTel to deliver 4G for tablets

SINGAPORE - SingTel today announced the launch of Singapore's first 4G service for tablets.

The 4G service for tablets will launch on Aug 28, and will allow tablet users access speeds more than three times faster than current 3G services, offering users theoretical download speeds of up to 75Mbps. SingTel says typical download speeds will run between 3.4 to 12Mbps, with 20 per cent of the network latency from 3G services.

With the launch of the 4G service for tablets, SingTel will be launching a new subscription plan, the Prestige 75. SingTel will also be launching two 4G-compatible tablet models - the Asus Transformer Pad TF300TL and the Samsung Galaxy Tab 8.9 (LTE), with the Prestige 75 plan. Monthly subscription for the Prestige 75 will run at either S$49.90 or S$64.90 per month, depending on how much customers pay up front for the tablets.

With the launch of the new 4G service, SingTel is aiming to be the first in Singapore to bring in 4G -capable tablets for their customers.

"With the high speeds and low latency performance of our 4G network, tablet users will enjoy the ultimate multimedia experience for their videos, games, music and online content. We were the first to bring 4G smartphones to Singapore, and we are thrilled to be the first to put 4G tablets into the hands of our customers," said SingTel CEO Consumer Singapore Yuen Kuan Moon.

Current 4G customers can also choose to purchase a tablet with a multi-SIM plan, and SingTel also aims to expand the range of tablets available in future.

SingTel has added that they are on track for the expansion of their 4G network.

"We are rapidly expanding our 4G network coverage, and we are well on track to achieve island wide coverage early next year," said Mr Yuen.
